Abstract

In drilling activities, drilling mud is one of the important parameters that can influence the success of drilling activities. The problem of inefficient removal of cuttings and loss of mud fluid into the formation is an important thing to evaluate in increasing the efficiency of wellbore cleaning, so the rheological properties of the drilling fluid must be frequently monitored during the drilling process to avoid problems related to changes in physical properties. One of the fundamental problems with drilling mud is of course deficiency which can be characterized as a partial or complete lack of drilling fluid that enters the development during the penetration system. To avoid kicks or lost circulation, additional materials need to be added to obtain the mud quality as needed. In this research, Styrofoam waste powder was used as an additional material which was mixed into the drilling mud in order to find out how it affected the rheological properties of the drilling mud. The results showed changes in values in the rheological properties of the mud such as plastic viscosity, yield point and gel strength with values in accordance with specifications at an additional concentration of 1 gr. 1.5 gr, and 2 gr, 2.5 Styrofoam waste powder. Therefore, in determining the rheological properties of drilling mud, it can be concluded that the use of Styrofoam waste powder in drilling mud can be used as a substitute for barite additives based on the results obtained which meet the specifications.
