Abstract

Concrete is a widely utilized construction material in various types of structures such as buildings, bridges, and roads. In 2019, the production of Crude Palm Oil (CPO) in Indonesia reached its peak at 47.18 million tons. The increase in production volume has led to a corresponding rise in waste generated during the production process. Spent Bleaching Earth (SBE) is one of the waste products from the palm oil industry and holds potential as a constituent in concrete. This research aims to investigate the compressive strength comparison between SBE-mixed concrete and normal concrete, as well as to determine the optimal percentage of SBE usage in concrete. The research methodology adheres to the standards outlined in SNI 7656:2012, with a planned compressive strength (f’c) of 20 MPa. Test specimens consist of cylindrical concrete samples measuring 15 x 30 cm, with variations in SBE additions at 0%, 3%, and 5% relative to the weight of cement, resulting in a total of nine samples. The research findings indicate that the use of SBE at 0%, 3%, and 5% as a partial substitute for cement at the 28-day age of the specimens yielded compressive strengths of 21 MPa, 20 MPa, and 20,4 MPa, respectively. In terms of compressive strength testing, the results reveal a 5% increase in compressive strength for normal concrete compared to the planned strength. Conversely, for concrete mixtures with 3% SBE, there is an 11,5% reduction in compressive strength from normal concrete, while concrete mixtures with 5% SBE experience a 9,7% decrease in compressive strength from normal concrete. From these findings, it can be concluded that the utilization of Spent Bleaching Earth (SBE) does not significantly enhance the compressive strength of concrete. Despite SBE's high SiO2 content, its water-absorbing nature diminishes the water content in concrete, resulting in a decrease in compressive strength.
