Abstract

Concrete is a material obtained from the mixture of fine aggregate, coarse aggregate, water bound by cement. In current infrastructure development, the role of concrete as a construction material is becoming increasingly crucial over time. In this context, ideas and innovations are needed to create new materials that can replace existing ones. As an effort to achieve this, the idea of utilizing Spent Bleaching Earth, a solid waste resulting from the processing of palm oil, as an alternative material has emerged. Spent Bleaching Earth (SBE) is a residual solid waste produced from vegetable oil refining industries, particularly during the refining process of Crude Palm Oil (CPO) or raw palm oil. This research aims to determine the influence of utilizing Spent Bleaching Earth on the tensile strength of concrete and the optimal content of Spent Bleaching Earth that can provide a significant improvement in concrete tensile strength. This experimental method was conducted based on the standardization of SNI 7656-2012. The test specimens were cylindrical concrete measuring 15 x 30 cm with variations in the addition of Spent Bleaching Earth (SBE) at 0%, 3%, 5%, and 7% relative to the weight of cement, resulting in a total of 12 samples. The research results indicate that the use of Spent Bleaching Earth (SBE) with variations of 0%, 3%, 5%, and 7% as a partial substitute for cement in concrete tensile strength at a 28-day age of specimens are 2.571 MPa, 2.830 MPa, 2.925 MPa, and 3.043 MPa, respectively. From these findings, it can be concluded that the utilization of Spent Bleaching Earth significantly enhances the tensile strength of concrete. The highest tensile strength value is achieved with the addition of 7% Spent Bleaching Earth.
