Abstract

One of the public places that produces a lot of waste is the market. Garbage from market activities can produce contaminants that will pollute the environment and have a direct impact on human health. In order to get the best results and meet expectations, the municipal solid waste management systems on the market must be handled effectively and efficiently. Based on an initial survey conducted at Pasar Pagi Arengka, Pekanbaru City, it was found that there was still trash around the stalls of traders and that not all traders provided waste containers such as sacks or plastic bags. In addition, around the TPS, trash was found that was not accommodated and was even scattered on the roadside. This indicates that the participation of traders in waste management at Pasar Pagi Arengka is still low. So the purpose of this study was to determine the level of participation of traders in waste management at Pasar Pagi Arengka, Pekanbaru City. The type of research used is qualitative research. In this study, we used descriptive qualitative analysis techniques to identify waste management systems and scoring analysis to determine the level of participation of traders in waste management at Pasar Pagi Arengka. Based on the research results, it is known that the waste management system at Pasar Pagi Arengka still uses the old system, namely "collect - transport - dispose", and that there are still deficiencies in waste management operations, namely in waste storage, waste collection, and waste transportation. Furthermore, it is also known that the level of participation of traders in waste management at Pasar Pagi Arengka is at the medium level of participation criteria, with a trader participation score of 1.667.
