Abstract

Water saturation of formations is one of the keys in determining whether a reservoir interval contains water or hydrocarbons. If the determination of water saturation values is not carried out accurately, it will affect the estimation of hydrocarbon reserves, both in discovering new wells and in increasing production from existing wells. This study calculates water saturation using various equation methods to determine the most suitable method for wells RFD-01, RFD-02, RFD-03, and RFD-04 across seven formations in Field X. The determination is made by validating the results of water saturation calculations from the Archie method, the Indonesian method, and the Simandoux method using sidewall core data. The methods employed in this study are based on qualitative and quantitative analyses conducted with the assistance of Geolog software. The qualitative analysis results identify that the reservoir zone under investigation can be categorized as shaly sand by examining the combination of gamma ray logs, resistivity logs, and neutron-density logs. The quantitative analysis results from the water saturation calculations using the Archie method show relatively higher results with a water saturation value of 98% in the T_C formation. The Indonesian method shows relatively lower results with a water saturation range of 95%-70%, with the lowest value in the T_A formation. The Simandoux method shows slightly higher water saturation results compared to the Indonesian method and lower results compared to the Archie method in each formation, with a water saturation range of 94%-76%. The validation results from the comparative analysis of water saturation calculation methods using the Archie method, the Indonesian method, and the Simandoux method indicate that the Indonesian method is more suitable for use in Field X because it shows better alignment with the validation from sidewall core data, supplemented by perforation data and other petrophysical parameters.
