Abstract

Urban villages are an important part of urban spatial planning that maintains the characteristics of rural settlements in an urban setting. The sustainable urban village concept integrates traditional village characteristics with sustainability principles, an approach adopted by Kampung Melayu in Pekanbaru City. Even though it is rich in cultural values and local heritage, rapid urban growth in Pekanbaru has suppressed the existence of Kampung Melayu. In urban planning based on modern development models, traditional villages are often ignored, resulting in loss of physical and non-physical existence. The aim of this research is to implement Kampung Melayu as a sustainable urban village by utilizing the Asian New Urbanism approach. This research uses the Asian New Urbanism approach to study and realize Kampung Melayu as a sustainable urban village. Fishbone analysis is used to identify the causes and effects of problems, while scoring analysis from questionnaire data evaluates the level of sustainability based on social, economic and environmental aspects. The research results show that Kampung Melayu has a fairly good level of sustainability, especially in economic and environmental aspects. Modernization has brought significant changes in architecture and culture, but traditions of mutual cooperation and social activities are still maintained. However, cultural identity in Kampung Melayu has decreased due to the influence of modernization, although some traditions are still maintained.
