Abstract

The radiator is a cooling system that uses fluid (coolant) as a heat absorbing medium, which aims to reduce heat in the engine. However, the fluid in the radiator is threatened with corrosion due to oxidation caused by the fluid. This research aims to observe the corrosion rate of 3102 aluminum material in engine radiators by comparing different types of coolant. In this research, the corrosion testing media used were 100% coolant A, 100% coolant B, 100% well water, 70% coolant A + 30% well water and 70% coolant B + 30% well water. The results of the lowest weight loss value in the test medium of 100% coolant A were 0.0007 grams, while the highest weight loss value occurred in the test medium of 70% coolant B + 30% well water, namely 0.0177 grams. The lowest corrosion rate results occurred in the test medium of 100% coolant A, namely 0.01069 mm/year, while the highest corrosion rate occurred in the test medium of 70% coolant B + 30% well water, namely 0.2703 mm/year. This is due to the weight loss and corrosion rate of aluminum 3102 in the radiator, where the test medium (Coolant) contains anti-rust additives which are used to absorb heat. The test media (Coolant) contains additives such as glycol with the ability to make the coolant have a higher boiling point and lower freezing point so that it can neutralize the rate of corrosion in aluminum 3102. Meanwhile, the test media for well water and coolant + well water easily occur. The reduction in aluminum 3102 can be seen from the increase in the value of weight loss and the small remaining volume of the test media.
