Abstract
lastic waste is a material that is difficult to decompose by the soil. Its presence is very disturbing to the surrounding environment. One way to use plastic waste is as a substitute material in the manufacture of paving blocks. This study was conducted to reduce the use of sand as a material for making paving blocks by using PP (PolyPropylene) plastic waste, the aim is to determine the effect on the compressive strength and water absorption of paving blocks. The use of PP plastic waste as a partial substitution of sand with a mixture composition of 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% of the weight of the sand. The paving block was made using a mold measuring 20 x 10 x 6 cm and the test was carried out after 28 days using the SNI 03-0691-1996 method on concrete bricks (paving blocks). The results showed that the average compressive strength of paving blocks with the use of PP plastic waste as a partial substitute for sand decreased with each variation. In the 0% and 10% variations, the compressive strength values of 186.47 kg/cm2 and 171.13 kg/cm2 are obtained, both of which are B quality. While the paving blocks are at the 20% and 30% variations, the compressive strength values are 138.08 kg. /cm2 and 93.24 kg/cm2 which are categorized as C and D quality. Water absorption of paving blocks for variations of 0%, 10%, and 20%, respectively, is 4.89%, 7.42%, and 9.57 % which are included in the quality B, C, and D. While the variation of 30% is 10.77% which is not included in the quality. This shows that the greater the use of PP plastic waste as a partial replacement for sand, the higher the percentage of water absorption from paving blocks.
