Abstract

The recitation method was one of the methods used to improve students' understanding. From field observations, it could be noted that the understanding of students, especially at elementary school 190 Pekanbaru, was still low. Symptoms of low understanding included students' inability to identify conclusions, their inability to identify relevance and irrelevance, their inability to find differences, and their inability to interpret what was observed. The problem formulation in this research was: Can the application of the recitation method improve the understanding of Islamic education, especially the topic of paying zakat, for sixth-grade students at elementary school 190 Pekanbaru? Therefore, the objective of this research was to investigate the improvement of understanding through the application of the recitation method in the sixth-grade class at elementary school 190 Pekanbaru. Using a classroom action research (CAR) approach, tests were established to measure students' understanding, and data were analyzed using the percentage of test results with descriptive statistics. The results of the research showed that before the use of the recitation method in the pre-cycle, students' understanding was categorized as very poor (28%). After the recitation method was applied in the first cycle, students' understanding increased to (59%) with a sufficient category. Continuing to the second cycle, students' critical thinking skills increased to (90%) with a very high category. It could be concluded that the application of the recitation method can improve students' understanding in learning Islamic education, specifically the topic of paying zakat, in the sixth-grade class at elementary school 190 Pekanbaru.
