Abstract
In SS400 steel, a carbon addition process (Carburizing) is carried out to obtain high hardness properties using the Carburizing process in the Quenching variation with water and oil cooling media. Each steel has different characteristics, such as physical properties, mechanical properties and chemical properties. Therefore, special treatment is needed which is expected to have a longer life than planned, so the resistance of this material can be done through heat treatment by carburizing with a variety of quenching, namely direct quenching, single quenching, double quenching with water and oil cooling media aimed at increasing violence. After the Quenching variation is carried out, a tempering process is also carried out which aims to eliminate internal stress and strengthen the steel from brittleness. From the Vickers test results, the highest score was obtained by SS400 Direct Quenching steel. Meanwhile, the highest toughness value was obtained by SS400 Double Quenching steel. However, the impact test results are inversely proportional to the Vickers test results. In metallographic testing there were ferrite and pearlite but no martensite phase was found, which was found in double quenching heat treatment, namely the formation of new grains in the specimen.
