Abstract
Leaf springs are a type of suspension commonly used on trucks that usually receive heavy loads. If the leaf spring is given a heavy load repeatedly it will cause the leaf spring to break. This study aims to determine whether the effect of the cooling medium on the wear of the bit when drilling SUP9 steel. In the steel drilling process SUP9 uses a spindle rotation speed of 280 rpm with variations of coolant water, oil dromus, and vegetable oil. The research process began with cutting the long and flat SUP9 steel material to a length of 100 mm with a diameter of 60 mm. 4 holes were made with a through-drilling process using a 280 rpm spindle rotation variation, the holes were made to have a depth of cut of 5 mm using water coolant, oil dromus, and vegetable oil, by pouring it out. After drilling, the next step is to measure the wear of the chisel using an Oliympus BX53M digital microscope. The highest bit wear results were drilling using clean water coolant, which was 3720.70 µm long and 928.64 µm thick, while the lowest tool bit wear was using vegetable oil coolant, which was 1661.02 µm long and 362.58 µm thick. For the temperature obtained from this drilling process, the highest temperature value is found in drilling using vegetable oil coolant, which is 52,6°C, and the lowest temperature value is found in drilling using oil dromus coolant, which is 37.9°C.
