Abstract
The drilling process is to make round holes using a drill bit on a used SUP9 leaf spring. From the drilling process there are two results that we want to know, namely the shape of the chip and the low surface roughness value of the leaf spring hole. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the re-drilling process of used SUP9 leaf springs with variations in spindle rotation speed and cooling media could affect the surface roughness value of leaf spring holes. In this study, researchers want to know the most optimal variation. The method in this study uses the experimental method. The material used in this research is medium carbon spring steel, with medium carbon content. The SUP9 steel leaf spring drill uses spindle rotation, 95 Rpm, 170 Rpm, 280 Rpm and coolant, dromus oil, clean water and vegetable oil. The highest roughness value is 9,246 µm, which is produced from a spindle rotation speed of 95 Rpm using clean water as a cooling medium. As for the low hole surface roughness value or the best with a value of 1,695 µm obtained with a variation of the spindle rotation speed of 280 Rpm. Tubular chip shape is the best chip type because it has the lowest surface roughness. The smallest average length value was 15.6 mm at the lowest spindle rotation variation of 95 Rpm using clean water or plain water as a cooling medium. Meanwhile, the longest chip length was obtained from the highest spindle rotation speed of 280 Rpm using dromus oil and vegetable oil with a length value of 41.6 mm. From the variations in spindle rotation speed and cooling media in this study, all of them affect the roughness of the surface of the hole and the shape of the chip. But the most influential is the spindle speed rotation.
