Abstract

ST-42 steel is a type of low carbon steel with a carbon content below 0.25%. Applications of ST-42 steel include construction steel in building frames for bridges, towers and others. One of the causes of cracked or broken welds is the use of filler metal that does not match the load during the welding process. This is due to the internal stresses created by the heat from the welding process. Residual stresses harden the material and reduce its strength. To restore the ductility of the molten metal, post weld heat treatment (PWHT) needs to be done. This study aims to determine the variation of SMAW welding seams on PWHT on the tensile strength and toughness of ST-42 steel. Tensile and toughness test results of seam variations on PWHT welding using SMAW showed that the results of tensile testing of specimens on ST-42 steel with a K-shaped seam of 450 angle had a Tensile strength (Mpa) of 433.8 Mpa and 13.8% elongation at seam X angle of 600 Tensile strength (Mpa) 398.7 Mpa and elongation 6.1% and at seam V angle 600 Tensile strength (Mpa) 292.0 Mpa and elongation 4.2%, Toughness test results at seam K angle 450 with a value of 0.8 Joule/mm2, X seam angle of 600 with a value of 1.33 Joule/mm2 and at seam V angle of 600 is 1.4 Joule/mm2. The V and X seams have a lower tensile strength value than the K seams of 433.8 MPa because they have a smaller distortion angle. As for the toughness test, seams K and X were lower than seams V by 1.4 Joules/mm2 because seams K and X experienced two welded sides.
