Abstract
ST 37 steel is a low carbon steel. The problem that often occurs in carbon steel is corrosion. Tannins have complex compounds that can be used as inhibitors to protect metals from corrosion. Kepok banana peel is one of the ingredients used as a corrosion inhibitor due to the presence of tannins. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of kepok banana peel extract on the corrosion rate of low carbon steel in different corrosion media. The corrosion media used were NaCl, H2S04, and Peat Water. Corrosion testing was carried out at inhibitor concentrations of 0%, 8% and 10% with immersion times of 5, 10, 15 and 20 days. From the research results, the lowest corrosion rate was obtained at 10% inhibitor concentration, namely 0.066 mm/y (in NaCl), 0.08 mm/y (in peat water) and 9.867 mm/y (in sulfuric acid). While the highest corrosion rate was obtained at concentrations without the addition of inhibitors of kapok banana peel extract. Meanwhile, the value of inhibitor efficiency increased at concentrations of 8% and 10%. The highest inhibitor efficiency at a concentration of 10% is 69.6% (in NaCl), 68.9% (in peat water) and 33% (in sulfuric acid). From the results of this study it can be concluded that the most suitable media for application with kepok banana peel extract are NaCl media and peat water.
