Abstract

This research is the development of a portfolio assessment tool. Based on the initial data obtained by the researchers, it appeared that the portfolio assessment applied to expository writing materials in class VIII SMPN 34 Pekanbaru had not been properly performed. This is evidenced by the results of the researchers' observations of teachers through interviews, which showed that students' learning interests varied, so that this portfolio assessment was rarely used. Therefore, with the assessment tools put together by researchers, it can help teachers to carry out learning well. The aim of this study was to determine the level of validity, usefulness and effectiveness in developing tools for assessing writing material portfolios for Grade 8 students at SMPN 34 Pekanbaru in the academic year 2022/2023. The method used in this study is the research and development/R&D method. Techniques used for data collection are observation, interviews and documentation. The data analysis technique used is 1. Validity analysis, 2. Practical analysis and 3. Effectiveness analysis. The results of this study are in the form of explanatory portfolio assessment tools based on aspects of content, structure and language conventions that are valid, practical and effective. It can be concluded that the portfolio assessment tool on explanatory text material at SMPN 34 Pekanbaru meets valid criteria with a score of 70 valid categories, meets practical criteria with an average score of 82.7 in the category very practical, meets effective criteria with an average score of 78 effective category. Thus, the tool developed for assessing the explanatory text portfolio can be used by educators and students in learning for grade VIII SMP.
