Abstract

The background of this research is that textbooks for learning to read are still difficult to find in universities in Pekanbaru city, and also textbooks for learning to read used by students still have weaknesses. The problem in this research is textbooks for learning to read: characteristic needs analysis. This study aims to find textbooks for learning to read: characteristic needs analysis. The theories used in this study are related to the theory of textbooks, reading, learning to read. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. The data used in this study are the results of questionnaire answers and the results of interview answers from research respondents. The source of the data in this study were class B students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, Islamic University of Riau, semester 7 class of 2019 who had taken a reading learning course. Data collection techniques in this study were questionnaire techniques (questions), interviews, and documentation. The data analysis technique in this study is to use the analytical method from Milles and Huberman, in this analysis technique there are three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and data verification. Based on the results of research on respondents' responses to recommendations for content requirements, presentation techniques, and language in textbooks for learning to read, it can be concluded that students want (1) aspects of content needs, namely students want textbooks for learning to read must provide depth of material such as examples of material to facilitate reading. learning, and also students want the content of Riau Malay folklore in order to be able to have new knowledge if the content of Riau Malay folklore is added to textbooks for learning to read, (2) aspects of the need for presentation techniques, namely students want textbooks for learning to read must present concepts coherently, starting from from easy to difficult, known and also examples to help clarify the material so as to make it easier to understand the material, and (3) the aspect of language needs, namely students want textbooks for learning to read must present language fluency, and also clear language so that it makes it easier to understand the material.
