Abstract

Speaking is the most important basic skill in English language because it is productive. Higher order thinking (HOT) are high-level thinking skills that consist of the ability to analyze, evaluate and create. Problem-based Learning is a sudent-centered pedagogy in which students learn about a subject through the experience f solving an open-ended problem found in trigger material. The purpose of this research is there any significant effect of higher order thinking (hot) with problem-based learning toward students’ speaking ability of the eighth grade at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru. The problem of this research are the lack of vocabulary, the fluency of students, and the pronunciation when speaking English. In this study, the researcher used quasi-experimental design, and the methodology being quantitave. The sample of this study was 30 students in the control class from VIII.2 the researcher did not apply the HOT with PBL and 29 students in the experimental class from VIII.4 the researcher applied the experiment. The instrument of this study was speaking test while the speaking test used in pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 29.00 program, there are Normality test, T-Testing, and Paired Sample Test. The researcher found that applying higher order thinking with problem- based learning is able to give significant changed toward student speaking indicators are focused on the ability of students in vocabulary, grammar, fluency, comprehend, pronunciation. The result of students’ speaking ability in experimental class enhanced from 52.96 in pre-test became 76.20 in the post-test. The researcher got the t-calculated was 25.352, while the t-table based on df 28 was 2.060. Therefore, there is significant effect of HOT with PBL for improving students’ speaking ability at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru.
