Abstract

One of the factors that causes students' high-order thinking skills to be weak is the inability to analyze and evaluate properly. This study aims to analyze the differences in students' higher-order thinking skills after applying the Problem Based Learning (PBL) learning model in the matter of analyzing systematics and language of scientific work. The research method uses a quasi-experimental method with the Non-equivalent Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. This design is used to compare the results of the test (post-test) between the experimental group and the control group. Data is generated through observation, tests, and documentation. The results of the analysis show that there are differences in post-test scores for each indicator of higher order thinking skills. The experimental class recorded better results on the indicators of analyzing (comparing and contrasting) with a percentage of 91% (very good), while the control class recorded the highest results on the indicators of analyzing (analyzing arguments), evaluating and making conclusions with a percentage of 90% (very good). The conclusion is that the results of the analysis show that there is a significant difference between the post-test results of the two groups (experimental class and control class), and the application of PBL positively affects the improvement of students' higher order thinking skills in the experimental class. The implication of this study is that PBL can improve students' higher-order thinking skills, and its application can better support students in learning activities.
