Abstract

Waste oil exploitation is called produced water or what is known as produced water. Produced water should not be discharged directly into the environment because it contains many hazardous substances that can have a negative impact on the environment. Therefore, before the produced water is disposed of, so that it meets the water quality standards that can be disposed of into the environment. Activated carbon is free carbon with high absorption and porous which has undergone a reaction with a chemical substance. Research on the effect of activated carbon as a filter media during the water treatment process has been carried out several times. Jengkol peel contains 44.02% carbon (C) which is considered as the most important adsorbent element. This study used activated carbon material from jengkol peel waste as filter media with three thicknesses, namely 10 cm, 15 cm, and 20 cm and three sizes, namely 200 mesh, 300 mesh, and 400 mesh to determine the effect of several thicknesses of activated carbon and carbon size. active. Jengkol peel waste used as a filter must be activated before use. The activation process of activated carbon is carried out by heating in an oven for 120 minutes at 90 °C. The jengkol skin is then mashed and sieved using a sieve apparatus with three sizes, namely 200 mesh, 300 mesh and 400 mesh. The filtration process is carried out using a vertical tube in which a partition is provided to place the filter media through which oil-contaminated water will flow. The results of the research that has been done show that activated carbon from jengkol peel waste activated with H3PO4 can reduce the value of oil & fat content, turbidity, and pH. However, reducing the TDS content showed sub-optimal results. Effective activated carbon as a filtration medium is activated carbon with a particle size of 200 mesh at a thickness of 20 cm, 300 mesh at a thickness of 15 cm, and 400 mesh at a thickness of 20 cm because the value of oil & grease content, turbidity, and pH after the filtration process passes the standard water quality standard according to Minister of Environment Regulation No. 19 of 2010.
