Abstract

This research was motivated by the utterances of asking people to do something that were found in the Instagram comment column @nadiemmakarim and a survey which said that speech on social media by Indonesian netizens was classified as impolite. The problem in this study is how to form directive speech and the politeness principles of netizens in the comments column on the Instagram account @nadiemmakarim. The purpose of this study is to describe, analyze and interpret the forms of directive speech and politeness of netizens in the comments column on Instagram @nadiemmkarim. The theory used in this study is the theory of directive forms put forward by Ibrahim and the politeness principle put forward by Leech. The method used is content analysis. The data in this study are directive utterances contained in the Instagram comment column @nadiemmakarim dated December 3, 2021. The data collection technique used in this research is a documentation technique, observe, and note. The data analysis technique used is by coding, classifying, analyzing, interpreting and concluding the research results. The conclusions in this study are: First, there are six forms of directive utterances totaling 91 utterances. The six forms of directive speech are Requestives, Questions, Requirements, Prohibitives, Permissives, and Advisories. There are many forms of Requestives (Requests) because netizens hope for something to be done by @nadiemmakarim. Therefore, netizens issue directive Requestives (Requests). Second, there are five principles of politeness according to Leech in a total of 145 utterances. The five principles of politeness are the maxim of tact, the maxim of generosity, the maxim of appreciation, the maxim of agreement, and the maxim of sympathy and the writer does not find one that belongs to the maxim of modesty. Of the five principles of politeness, the most dominant is the maxim of agreement with a total of 57 utterances, while the least is the maxim of respect with a total of 5 utterances. Based on Leech's politeness principle, there are 60 utterances that are classified as polite and 85 utterances that are not polite.
