Abstract

Superstition is an expression containing supernatural which is used to educate children's behavior. The occurrence of shifts and changes in ethics and manners of behavior at the level of society is something to worry about. So we need a superstition that can be useful and can be accepted with rational thinking in accordance with Malay customary law which does not conflict with Islamic beliefs because the majority of the Tebing Tinggi Okura Malay community are Muslims. This study aims to examine the problems associated with describing superstitious forms, structures, meanings and functions in the categories of birth, infancy and childhood of the Malay community in Tebing Tinggi Okura Village, Rumbai Timur District, Pekanbaru City. This research is a type of qualitative research. The analysis of this research is based on Danandjaja's theory (1997) for category, structure and function coverage while Chaer's theory (2013) is used for meaning. Research data collection techniques were carried out by means of observation, interviews and fishing and listening techniques. Research data analysis was carried out in three stages, namely data reduction, presenting data and drawing conclusions. Based on the results of the analysis, it can be concluded that the superstition of the Malay community in the categories of birth, infancy and childhood: (1) the superstition of the Tebing Tinggi Okura Malay community has a two-part structure and a three-part structure, (2) the superstition of the Tebing Tinggi Okura Malay community contains a denotative meaning and connotative, (3) the superstition of the Tebing Tinggi Okura Malay community has a function as a thickener of religious emotions and beliefs, an imaginary projection system, an educational tool for children and youth as well as an explanation that is accepted by a folk sense of natural phenomena.
