Abstract
Indonesia is one of the largest palm oil producers in the world, in processing one tonne of palm oil is able to produce solid waste in the form of empty palm oil bunches by 23%. Fiber from oil palm empty fruit bunches is a solid waste that has been widely used and many studies have been conducted regarding its application to composite materials. Many studies have been carried out in utilizing natural fibers as composite materials, especially in ship body composite materials, where this research is expected to replace the use of fiberglass in fiber ship composite materials that are not environmentally friendly and are also expected to be an alternative material to replace the use of wooden ships. in overcoming the scarcity of wood. This research is planned by varying the blending of oil palm empty fruit bunches fiber as an alternative material for composite materials in the manufacture of fishing boats, using the alkaline method of 0.5% NaOH solution assisted by microwaves on fiber for 20 minutes with a power of 400 watts. In the manufacture of test specimens, the composition of the fibers used were 30%, 40% and 60%. This test aims to obtain a large effect of the weight fraction of oil palm empty fruit bunches with microwave-assisted fiber alkalization on the mechanical properties of composite materials on bending and impact tests on composite materials and examine the feasibility of oil palm empty fruit bunch fiber composite materials as an alternative material for ship hulls with benchmarks for impact and bending strength according to the standards of the Indonesian Classification Bureau. The results of the impact and bending tests showed that the highest strength of the composite was obtained with a fiber volume fraction of 60% with an impact price of 0.41 J/mm2 and a bending strength of 3.31 N/mm2. From the impact and bending strength values obtained for each fiber volume fraction with microwave-assisted fiber alkalization treatment for 20 minutes with a power of 400 watts, it still has not been able to improve the mechanical properties of oil palm empty fruit bunch fiber composites as a ship composite material based on standards from the Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia.
