Abstract

Factors Affecting Farmers' Decision to Adopt Paddy Rice Farming in Teluk Kelasa Village, Keritang District, Indragiri Hilir Regency, Riau Province, under the guidance of Dr. Ir. Marliati, M.Si.   Rice paddy farming is the activity of producing rice as the main source of food for the people of Indonesia. However, the number of wet-rice farmers has decreased. This study aims to analyze: 1) characteristics of farmers and the profile of wet-rice farming; 2) characteristics of innovations (wet-rice farming) and the performance of extension workers; 3) factors that significantly influence the decision of farmers to adopt wet-rice farming; 4) efforts to increase the adoption of wet-rice farming. This study used a survey method conducted for 6 months, located in Teluk Kelasa Village, Keritang Subdistrict, Indragiri Hilir Regency. Respondents were taken by quota sample totaling 85 respondents who were divided into 2 categories, namely 35 respondents in the category of stopping rice paddy farming and 50 respondents in the category of continuing rice paddy farming. Data were analyzed descriptively qualitative and quantitative. The results showed that: 1) The majority of farmers adopting paddy rice farming are 37-47 years old with primary school education, 11-20 years of farming experience and have 2-3 family dependents. Farmers cultivated land area of 1.5-2.0 ha only had 1 TKDK, spent 10.6-14.2 million rupiah / MT with paddy rice productivity 31.31-34.07 kw / ha. Meanwhile, the majority of farmers who stop adopting paddy rice farming are 48- 58 years old with a junior high school education level, 1-20 years of farming experience and have 2-3 family dependents. Farmers stop adopting farming have an area of 1.5-2.0 ha and also only have 1 TKDK, costs incurred 10.6-14.2 million rupiah / MT with productivity 23.24-25.92 kw / ha. 2) Farmers who continued to adopt farming stated that paddy rice farming was economically profitable and in accordance with the current cultural trends/customs of the village community environment, while farmers who stopped adopting farming stated that paddy rice farming was less economically profitable and less suitable. However, in terms of the complexity of wet-rice farming, farmers who continued and stopped adopting wet-rice farming agreed that wet-rice farming was complicated and also agreed that no agricultural extension performance was perceived by farmers. 3) Factors that significantly influence the decision of farmers to adopt paddy rice farming: farming experience, paddy rice productivity, and relative profit. 4) The need for the performance of agricultural extension workers who empower farmers in improving the ability of farmers to achieve good productivity and profitable for farmers in economic terms.
