Abstract

The significance of self-concept in determining adolescent behavior is very important. One of the factors related to the formation of self-concept is democratic parenting. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between democratic parenting and self-concept in adolescents. The population in this study was Pekanbaru City adolescents with a total sample of 113 people. The sampling technique in this study is the Simple Random Sampling technique. The data collection method uses a democratic parenting scale consisting of 36 items and a self-concept scale consisting of 8 items. The data analysis technique used in this research is the Person Product Moment correlation technique. The results of this study indicate that there is a significant positive relationship between parenting styles and self-concept in adolescents. This is evidenced by the Pearson product moment correlation values of r = 0.357 and p = 0.000 (p <0.05). This means that the higher the democratic parenting style in adolescents, the higher the level of self-concept in adolescents. Conversely, the lower the democratic parenting style in adolescents, the lower the level of self-concept in adolescents.
