Abstract
The laundry industry is one of the promising business opportunities in supporting the economic welfare of families and regions. The waste produced by this industry is in the form of detergents and various chemical substances that are harmful and cause pollution to the environment. This environmental pollution can be caused by wastewater from the laundry industry which contains a lot of pollutants in the form of fats and other organic compounds derived from dirty clothes, some chemical compounds such as sodium tripoli phosphate as a filler, and detergents or surfactants that are difficult to remodel naturally in nature. To reduce the impact on the environment of this laundry waste, several researchers have made preventive efforts before this waste is discharged into nearby waters, such as using filter media. The purpose of this study was to see a decrease in levels of COD, BOD, pH, and turbidity after and before filtration. And to find out the thickness of the media is effective for lowering plutan levels, for laundry waste. In this case using silika sand and activated charcoal as filter media. The filtartion in this case was carried out as many as 3 filters with 3 varian in the thickness of the filter media. In variation 1 the thickness of activated charcoal is 10 cm and silika sand is 10 cm, in variation 2 it uses activated charcoal 10 cm thick and silika sand 20 cm, while in variation three activated charcoal used it is also 10 cm and silika sand 30 cm. This case results the pH value before screening; varaiasi 1; variation 2; variation 3 (7.64;7.45;7.41;7.3). BOD value before screening; varaiasi 1; variation 2; variation 3 (185.2 mg/L; 136.9 mg/L; 92.61 mg/L; 88.58 mg/L). BOD value before screening; varaiasi 1; variation 2; variation 3 (380.5 mg/L; 253.1 mg/L; 243.6 mg/L; 216.5 mg/L). The Turbidity Value before screening is as follows; varaiasi 1; variation 2; variation 3 (285.3 NTU; 249.1 NTU; 211.8 NTU; 210.8 NTU). From the values obtained for the BOD, COD, pH parameters in the waste that has been filtered are in the predetermined quality standard range. As for turbidity, it is still necessary to do more research using variations of media with thickness and other types of media because the turbidity value obtained is still too high.Activated Charcoal, Filtration, Laundry, Silika Sand
