Abstract

Work stress is an employee problem due to the workload exceeding the ability of the employee. One aspect that contributes to job stress is emotional intelligence. Individuals with high emotional intelligence are assumed to be able to suppress work stress using good means. Therefore, a study was conducted with the aim of determining the relationship between emotional intelligence and work stress in employees of Universitas Islam Riau. The method used in this study is quantitative. The research data was collected using scales namely emotional intelligence scale and work stress scale. This study used the Simple Random Sampling technique, which is done randomly without giving the equivalent that exists in the population. The sample in this study consisted of 171 employees. The data analysis technique used is the pearson product moment correlation technique with the help of SPSS version 22.0 for Windows. From this study, it was found that emotional intelligence is positively related to work stress, with a value of 0.029 (sig<0.05). The value of the pearson correlation coefficient is 0.171 which means that both variables have a strong closeness category. So it is obtained that the higher the emotional intelligence, the lower the work stress that employees have. This research shows that work stress in employees is still common, so it takes action to provide training on improving emotional intelligence, increasing stress at work, preventive, and educative for agencies so as to help improve the quality of employees of Universitas Islam Riau.
