Abstract

Listening is a process that includes listening to the sounds of language, identifying, interpreting, and reacting to what is contained therein. The ability to listen to news is marked and proven by writing down news elements, namely 5W + 1H (what, when, where, who, why, how). Based on the observations that have been made, one of the teachers at Singingi 1 Public Middle School, namely Mrs. Darlina, S.Pd., said that students in learning Indonesian lacked student enthusiasm for learning. He also said that the students were not optimal in listening and understanding the material about determining the elements of the news conveyed, especially on the elements of why and how, while the elements of what, who, where. , and when (when) students easily understand because the news is clearly stated, even though the teacher has explained it well and clearly during the learning process both from the subject book and student worksheets (LKS). The problem in this research is how is the listening ability of class VIII students of SMP Negeri 1 Singingi, Singingi District, Kuantan Singingi Regency for the 2022/2023 academic year in determining the elements of the news that are listened to? This study aims to describe, analyze, and interpret listening skills in determining news elements for Grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 1 Singingi, Singingi District, Kuantan Singingi Regency for the 2022/2023 academic year. The population in this study were students of class VIII.1, which consisted of 23 students. The sample used is saturated/total sample. The sampling technique in this study was a total sample technique which took 23 students out of 45 students. The method used is descriptive method with a quantitative approach. The theory used in this study refers to the theory of Tarigan (2014), Morrisan (2010), Djuraid (20012), Ministry of Education and Culture (2017). The results of the research on listening skills in determining news elements for class VIII students of SMP Negeri 1 Singingi, Singingi District, Kuantan Singingi Regency for the 2022/2023 academic year are in the good category, namely 78.98. The conclusion from the study of listening skills in determining news elements for class VIII students of SMP Negeri 1 Singingi, Singingi District, Kuantan Singingi Regency for the 2022/2023 academic year is in the good category. The previously established hypothesis states that the listening ability in determining news elements for class VIII students of SMP Negeri 1 Singingi, Singingi District, Kuantan Singingi Regency for the 2022/2023 academic year is in the sufficient category with a score range of 56-65, this research hypothesis is rejected.
