Abstract

Consumptive behavior is a human tendency to consume unlimited, not infrequently humans are more concerned with emotional factors than rational factors or more concerned with desires than needs. Consumptive behavior that occurs in female students is caused by wanting to get recognition from their social environment. This encourages students to shop for goods or services not because of need but based on desire or fulfill a sense of satisfaction. Students who want their existence to be considered and their existence recognized by the environment by trying to become that environment. The need to be accepted and be the same as others causes students to follow various attributes that are trending. One way is to behave consumptively. This study aims to determine the relationship between self-esteem and consumptive behavior of students at the Islamic University of Riau. This research uses quantitative research methods. The population in this study were students of the Faculty of Psychology, Islamic University of Riau. From the results of the research conducted, it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between self-esteem and consumptive behavior at the Islamic University of Riau. This means that the higher the self-esteem, the higher the introduction of teenagers, and vice versa, the lower the self-esteem, the lower the consumptive behavior. The contribution of self-esteem to consumptive behavior is 41.1% while 58.9% is another factor not examined in this study.
