Abstract

Social media at this time is no longer a tool to find information, but to find out more valuable activities carried out by other people compared to their experiences, causing fear when they do not know about other people's activities on social media which is called fear of missing out. Fear of missing out behavior is caused by several factors including low self-control. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between self-control and fear of missing out among students who use social media at Riau Islamic University. The data collection method in this study uses the brief self-control scale adapted by Arifin and Mirra (2020) from the scale developed by De Ridder (2012) which consists of 10 items and the Online Fear of Missing Out (On-FoMO) scale adapted by Kurniawan and Rahayu (2022) from a scale developed by Sette, et al (2020) based on the theory of Przybylski, et al (2013) which consists of 20 items. The sample in this study was 300 students using social media who were obtained through the probability sampling method, namely cluster random sampling. The statistical analysis used in this study is the Spearman Rho method. The results of the statistical analysis showed a correlation value of -0.385 with a sig value of 0.00 <0.05, which means that there is a significant negative relationship between self-control and the fear of missing out of students who use social media at the Islamic University of Riau. This means that the higher the self-control, the lower the fear of missing out, and vice versa.
