Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the improvement of mathematical creative thinking skills of students at YLPI P. Marpoyan Middle School through the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach. This approach was chosen because it is considered capable of connecting mathematical concepts with real situations, so that it can strengthen the understanding of concepts as a whole and encourage students to think creatively and innovatively. Through this approach, students are invited to be more active in finding solutions, explaining their thoughts, and developing various ideas. This study used a quasi-experimental method with a nonequivalent control group design. The subjects consisted of two classes, namely the experimental class that received learning with the RME approach and the control class that used conventional learning. The research instrument was in the form of pretest and posttest questions based on four indicators of creative thinking: fluency, originality, flexibility, and detail. Data analysis was carried out through the normality test and the Mann-Whitney U test to determine significant differences between groups. The results showed that the average posttest and n-gain scores of the experimental class were higher than those of the control class. The results of the research hypothesis analysis show that the RME approach is significantly more effective in improving mathematical creative thinking skills than the conventional approach (p = 0.0015 < 0.05). Thus, the RME approach provides a higher increase in mathematical creative thinking skills than the conventional approach.
