Abstract

Coconut water can provide health benefits for human. People can buy the coconut water from traders that sell it in almost every corner of the city or at restaurants. The number of coconut traders causes the amount of coconut coir waste to increase. Some uses of coconut waste are as a basic material for making natural fiber composites or biocomposites and as natural dyes in various fashion products. In order to be used more widely, it is necessary to test the content of secondary metabolites (phytochemical test) of the coconut fiber, where the phytochemical test aims to determine the active compounds contained in a sample using the right solvent. Young coconut coir was maserated using three solvents with different polarity, hexane, acetone, and ethanol. The result showed that ethanol is the suitable solvent and based on phytochemical test, the extract contained flavonoids, terpenoids and tannins, and also polyphenols as the active compound.
