Abstract
This research aimed to identify the first reading challenges and remediation strategies faced by eight-year-old children at SDN 143 Pekanbaru. A case-studystyle qualitative research methodology was applied. Documentation, interviews, and observations were the techniques used for data collection. Triangulation was used to assess the validity of this research data. Data reduction, visualization, and conclusion drawing were used to test data analytic procedures. Based on research findings, some children still have difficulty pronouncing and recognizing the letters b and d, reading words that have affixes, and understanding simple phrases. The findings of this study indicate that internal elements, such as signs of fatigue and signs of student motivation to access reading materials, are the causes of reading challenges. Background and reading proficiency are examples of external environmental factors. Teachers have also performed various roles in helping students overcome their reading challenges, such as messenger, facilitator, intermediary, assessor, administrator or director, motivator, organizer, or initiator.
