Abstract

The electroplating process is usually carried out as a finishing with the aim of producing a coating that functions as a decorative-protective coating on motor vehicle parts. In the electroplating process, the coating time plays an important role in the formation of the coating. This study aims to determine the effect of coating time on the thickness and corrosion rate of the resulting material. In this study, the material used is motorcycle footstep as cathode, and chrome solution as anode. The current used is 5 Ampere, voltage 12 Volt with immersion time of 20 minutes, 25 minutes, 30 minutes and immersion time using 3.5% brine for 25 days. The results showed that the highest average thickness value occurred in a specimen with a coating time of 30 minutes, which was 48.02 ?m. Meanwhile, the lowest average thickness value occurred in a specimen with a coating time of 20 minutes, which was 21.63 ?m. The highest corrosion rate in steel yields an average of 0.089 mm/y in uncoated specimens. Meanwhile, the lowest corrosion rate occurred in a 30-minute coating time specimen with an average value of 0.029 mm/y. The results show that the longer the electroplating time, the higher the thickness value and the lower the corrosion rate value.
