Abstract

Converts are not something that can be lived easily, because individuals who decide to do so naturally will experience difficulties because they completely leave their old beliefs. Religious struggle or religious struggle can be part of the journey as a convert. Most converts (80%) report experiencing periods of psychological stress or even crisis as a precursor to conversion. This study aims to describe how converts describe the experience of religious struggle, the impacts and efforts of converts. The research method uses a qualitative phenomenology approach involving 3 Muslim converts in Pekanbaru. Data collection techniques using semistructured interviews and anecdotal observations. As for the results of this study, the three informants described the experience of religious struggle which cannot be separated from aspects, namely divine struggle , demonic struggle interpersonal struggle , intrapersonal struggle ( moral struggle , doubt struggle , ultimate meaning struggled ). The factor that caused the religious struggle to occur in the three informants was the environment in the form of a lack of social support, which led to many conflicts that occurred in the early phase of converting to Islam. Differences in understanding, as well as the personality factors of the informants themselves who have a new identity to become a convert. feelings of well-being, life satisfaction, and peace for the three informants. The efforts made by the three informants to maintain firmness in Islam as converts are by strengthening social support from other people, especially through active involvement in the religious community they follow. The conclusion obtained is that religious struggle is felt by converts in a complex way from various aspects of life to achieving psychological well-being.
