Abstract
This study aims to determine the comparison of the strength of Drill Pipe welding joints using SMAW and MIG welding processes using a current of 140 A. The electrode used is E 7018, the weld used is a v-weld with an angle of 35 degrees. The test carried out is a tensile test. From the results of the tensile strength test, it can be seen that there is a significant difference in the ultimate stress value (tu) N / mm2 in each type of welding on the Drill Pipe material. Where the highest ultimate stress value is welding with the SMAW method, with the largest ultimate stress value (tu) being 681.25 N / mm2 and then followed by the MIG welding method with the largest ultimate stress value (tu) being 658.04 N / mm2, then the lowest Ultimate Stress (tu) in SMAW welding is 570.89 N / mm2, and in MIG welding the Ultimate Stress value (tu) is 543.68 N / mm2. Thus, the SMAW welding method produces a stronger combination of two drill pipe materials compared to the MIG method, this is because in SMAW welding the heat generated comes from the presence of an electric arc which causes the electrode and base metal to melt simultaneously, resulting in a stronger combination of materials compared to the MIG welding method.
