Abstract

Polymer flooding is a chemical EOR method that is widely applied in the oil and gas industry because it is easier to apply and also cheaper. Currently, the polymers used in the chemical EOR method are divided into two classes, namely synthetic polymers and biopolymers. One type of biopolymer such as starch, dextran, xanthan, chitosan and cellulose. In this study, researchers wanted to utilize the cellulose content found in cocoa shells to be used as a material for making biopolymers which would later be applied to the application of the chemical EOR method. The stages in this study were sample preparation, cellulose isolation and characteristic tests in the form of compatibility, viscosity vs concentration, viscosity vs shear rate, and FTIR tests. This study used variations in salinity concentrations of 50,000 ppm, 55,000 and 60,000 ppm and at temperatures of 70°C, 80°C and 90°C. The test results for the cocoa shell biopolymer did not pass the compatibility test, the viscosity results obtained for the cocoa shell biopolymer had the highest viscosity value of 1.31 cP at a concentration of 0.5%, a salinity of 50,000 ppm, and at a temperature of 70 C, while xanthan gum had the highest viscosity of 1, 74 cP at a concentration of 0.5%, a salinity of 50,000 ppm and a temperature of 70 C. The results of the viscosity vs shear rate of cocoa shells had the highest viscosity value, namely a concentration of 0.5% 5.96 cP. Cocoa shells cellulose was detected by the appearance of OH, CH, C-O, and C=O groups in the FTIR test.
