Abstract

Politeness in speech is needed so that there is no offense between the speech participants, especially in imperative speech. Imperative utterances are commands that ask the interlocutor to do what the speaker wants. Therefore, researchers are interested in examining speech politeness in the school environment, especially among students of class XI IPS SMA N 2 Bangko Pusako. The problem being researched is how polite the imperative speech of class XI IPS students of SMA N 2 Bangko Pusako is. The theory used by the researcher is the theory proposed by Rahardi and Leech (in Rahardi, 2005). Sources of data are language activities that occur between students. The data obtained are all imperative utterances identified in student speech. The collection technique used is observation technique, listening technique, and note-taking technique, recording technique. The analysis technique used by the author is coding, data classification, and interpreting the research findings proposed by Lestari (2021). The conclusion of this study is that imperative speech is polite and it is found that the request imperative utterance is classified as impolite because every speech spoken by the speaker uses coercive language, does not think about the feelings of the interlocutor when the speaker orders the interlocutor.
