Abstract

Representation of Violence Against Women in Barbie Movie (John Fiske Semiotic Analysis) Vika Yurizka Nurliasary NPM: 209110033 Movies contain a lot of information that is slipped by the director to the audience, many messages that we can take when we watch a movie, because when we watch a movie we feel the emotions or feelings that are in it. Not only does it contain information, movies can also change thoughts or understanding from different perspectives, and make movies have many different meanings according to their point of view. With its appeal and ability to convey stories and messages, movies have become one of the most effective media in expanding our knowledge and awareness of the things that happen around us. Like the Barbie Movie, which tells the story of Barbie who is on an adventure to find her true identity. On her journey of self-discovery, Barbie faces a lot of unpleasant things and makes her understand that the world is inhabited by various kinds of people and various characters. The purpose of this study is to determine the representation of violence against women in the Barbie movie. The methodology used is qualitative methodology with John Fiske's semiotic analysis. Data collection techniques are interviews, observation, and documentation. The results of this study show that the movie “Barbie” contains acts of violence against women, in the form of physical violence such as touching without permission and hitting, psychological violence such as occurring in the form of harsh words, shouting, anger, and threats. The conclusion of this research is that the representation of violence against women consisting of physical and psychological violence is depicted in the Barbie movie.
