Abstract

Patience among the religious scholars residing in Islamic boarding schools is an intriguing subject for research. Often, these scholars are expected to exhibit patience in educating and disciplining their students. However, it is important to recognize that scholars, like any other humans, are not immune to making mistakes. In certain instances, scholars may lose patience while attempting to instill discipline among their students. The objective of this study is to explore the concept of patience from the perspective of Islamic psychology among scholars residing in Islamic boarding schools. The research methodology employed for this study is qualitative research. Purposive sampling was utilized, and two scholars living and teaching in an Islamic boarding school were selected as participants. The study reveals differences in the dimension of "Patience to do obedience" between the two participants. The first participant prioritizes enthusiasm, resilience, and prayer in fulfilling their obligations, whereas the second participant allows anger as a means of educational intervention. In the dimension of "Patience from suffering," the first participant emphasizes controlling anger, while the second participant emphasizes restraining emotions within limits. In the dimension of "Patience to avoiding," patience for the first participant is interpreted as self-restraint from wrongdoing and practicing virtuous values, whereas the second participant emphasizes patience as surrendering to the fate determined by Allah, known as "tawakkul" in Islam.
