Abstract

In completing their education, not all students in tertiary institutions live with their parents. This is because some students have the status of overseas students. Overseas students need a self-concept to be able to adapt. Basically, family functioning is one of the factors in the formation of self-concept in each individual. This study aims to determine the relationship between family functioning and the self-concept of students who migrate. This research is a correlational study with quantitative methods using a sample of 400 overseas students at Riau Islamic University and using purposive sampling techniques. The self-concept scale in the study used a modified scale from Asmarani (2020) and a family functioning scale using a modified scale from Utami (2020). Data analysis uses parametric correlation analysis because the data is normally distributed, so the test uses the pearson product moment correlation test. The results of this study reveal that there is a positive and significant relationship between self-concept and family functioning in overseas students with a value of r = 0.627 and sig = 0.000 (p <0.05). This means that the higher the family functioning provided, the higher the self-concept formed in the overseas students.
