Abstract

Students who are struggling to complete a thesis often face various challenges, which ultimately become obstacles in completing the final project. The existence of a number of obstacles in the process of preparing this thesis makes final year students more vulnerable to stress, anxiety, loss of motivation, feeling inadequate, lack of confidence, and may even cause them not to continue the thesis writing process. These circumstances often have an impact on low levels of self-esteem. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between peer social support and self-esteem in students working on a thesis at Riau Islamic University. This study involved 359 samples of students working on their thesis who were selected using cluster sampling technique. This research uses a quantitative method where the measuring instrument used is the Peer Social Support scale which is arranged based on aspects by Cohen, et al (2018) which consists of 25 items and uses the Self-Esteem scale which is arranged based on global aspects by Rosenbreg (1979) which has 10 item. Based on the results of the Spearman's rho correlation test analysis, the correlation coefficient (r) = 0.229 with a significance value of 0.000 (p <0.05) was obtained. This shows that there is a significant positive relationship between peer social support and self-esteem in students working on a thesis at Riau Islamic University.
