Abstract

Porous asphalt is an open-graded asphalt mixture with a coarse aggregate percentage of more than 85%, thus providing large air voids. These air voids are expected to pass rainwater which can cause disturbance to the comfort of the driver. The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum asphalt content value in porous asphalt mixtures and to determine the results of utilizing palm kernel shell ash waste in porous asphalt using pen 60/70 asphalt. This research was conducted using the Marshall Test and Permeability methods based on the specifications used in porous asphalt, namely the Australian Asphalt Pavement Association (AAPA) 2004 specifications with variations in asphalt content of 4.0%; 4.5%; 5.0%; 5.5%, and 6.0% and palm kernel shell ash content of 0%, 1%, and 2%. Based on the results of the study, the percentage of coarse aggregate usage was 70.40%, medium aggregate 15.40%, fine aggregate 4.25% and variations in asphalt content with percentages of 4.0%; 4.5%; 5.0%; 5.5% and 6.0%. So that the optimum asphalt content value obtained in the porous asphalt mixture is 5.4%. The addition of palm kernel shell ash to porous asphalt meets the Australian Asphalt Pavement Association (AAPA) 2004 specifications for Marshall and Permeability characteristics. The addition of 0%, 1% and 2% palm kernel shell ash has an effect on the porous asphalt mixture. The greater the percentage of palm kernel shell ash addition, the higher the VFA, stability and flow values. However, the VMA, VIM, MQ and Permeability values are lower. The addition of palm kernel shell ash in this study shows that the stability value is higher, while in permeability, the permeability value is lower, meaning that the addition of palm kernel shell ash to this porous asphalt mixture does not have a significant effect because of the smaller air voids in the mixture. The addition of palm kernel shell ash to the porous asphalt mixture increases the stability value which can increase the ability of road construction to receive loads, but the pavement layer is not permeable and the water flowing on the surface is slower.
