Abstract

This study aims to determine the function of Talempong Music at the Cecah Inai Event in Peranap Village, Peranap District, Indragiri Hulu Regency, Riau Province. The theory used according to Merriam (2002: 294) there are several functions of music, namely: (1) The function of emotional expression (2) The function of aesthetic appreciation, (3) The function of entertainment, (4) The function of communication, (5) The function of symbolism, (6) The function of bodily reactions, (7) Functions related to social norms, (8) The function of validating social institutions, (9) The function of social continuity, (10) The function of community integrity. The method in this research is descriptive qualitative. Data collection techniques used in this research are observation, interview, and documentation data collection techniques. The results of this study concluded that talempong music in the cecah henna ceremony at traditional weddings in Peranap Village has a function that is able to express the emotions of the listeners, as an aesthetic appreciation fulfilled by the presence of beauty, accompaniment and entertainment for the cecah henna traditional wedding. Talempong music makes the atmosphere lively and lively, so that it can be used as a medium of communication for all those present at the Cecah Henna event. The talempong music that is played is a symbol that a cecah henna event is taking place. Talempong music also has a function as physical recreation through its rhythm which spontaneously makes the limbs move when listening to it. Entertainers are at the same time internalized and not related to a person's social normals in society, so that it shows a culture that has been passed down from generation to generation and continues to be preserved. This music is able to bring togetherness to follow it when it is played by musicians, so that community integration is maintained.
