Abstract

The Teaching Assistance in Education Unit is a program under the Freedom of Learning Independent Campus (Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka) that benefits Indonesian students, especially pre-service teachers majoring in education. This program provides invaluable teaching experiences locally and internationally.This study aims to explore Indonesian pre-service English teachers' experiences during an International Teaching Assistance Program in Thailand and their experiences teaching English. A qualitative method with phenomenology approach was used employing individual interviews of the five (5) pre-service English teachers, who placed in four Southern Thailand School, based on purposive sampling. As the instruments of the research, interview through WhatsApp voice notes and documentation were used. Furthermore, thematic analysis was applied to analyze and determine the data from the participants. Findings from the study highlight five key themes to answer the first research question and one theme to answer the second research question. Firstly, the motivation in participating this program. Secondly, the initial process of joining the program. Thirdly, participants encountered obstacles. Fourthly, the valuable experiences. Fifthly, the program significantly enhanced participants' hard and soft skills. Lastly, participants described their English teaching experiences, focusing on pedagogical approaches, communication challenges, student engagement, and strategies for overcoming obstacles to answer the second research question. In conclusion, this study contributes to understanding the experiences of pre-service English teachers in international teaching programs, offering insights into program effectiveness, challenges, and the transformative impact on participants' professional and personal development
