Abstract

Applying translation procedures in translating is important to provide correct ways in transferring messages from one language into another. Nowadays, there have been a large number of materials that have been translated from English into Indonesian, and vice versa. One of the materials are song lyrics which are useful for different purposes, such as understanding the meaning of the songs, learning vocabularies, improving pronunciation or entertaining. Thus, this research focused on the analysis of translation procedures of two Disney's songs from English into Indonesian songs which aimed to find out the types of translation procedures used in the translated songs. This research worked on qualitative research approach by analyzing 40 verses of two Disney's songs: Do You Want to Build a Snowman? and Beauty and The Beast song. The songs were arranged into verse by verse. The verses were analyzed by referring to the 18 types of translation procedures adopted from Newmark (1988): transference, naturalization, cultural equivalence, functional equivalence, descriptive equivalence, synonymy, calque, transposition, modulation, recognized translation, translation label, compensation, componential analysis, expansion, reduction, paraphrase, couplets and Notes procedures. The process of data analysis in this research involved some steps; data managing, coding, listening, understanding, determining, and describing. The research findings showed that the translators tried to convey the meaning in the translated songs. only five procedures from eighteen that were used to translate the songs; transposition, modulation and reduction are the most frequently procedures used in the two Disney's songs and then followed by compensation and functional equivalent. Therefore, the translators need to be more selective in applying translation procedures in the songs. However, the results revealed that the translated songs are still acceptable as a song as the lyrics are suitable and the meaning is still conveyed.
