Abstract
Social media has become an inseparable part of the life of every individual in the world of the 21st century. Social media addiction in younger age groups is a major problem. The use of social media is considered one of the most common activities among students that can affect their daily lives. There is a nice variation of this degree of impact depending on gender and some other factors. This study aims to evaluate gender differences among students at universities in Riau, both public and private, to predict the impact of using social media in spreading panic during the pandemic which affects student academic outcomes. The quantitative research method used for this study using a cross-sectional study conducted on 650 samples of university students in Riau for 3 months using the Linkert rating scale Chi-squared test using SPSS (v 20) was used for data analysis. This study shows that gender differences significantly affect students' academic performance in the use of social media
