Abstract

Paving block is a building material composition based on a mixture of portland cement and other hydraulic adhesives, water and aggregate with or without other additives which do not affect the quality of the concrete (SNI 03- 0691-1996). The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of adding zeolite and coconut shell ash as a partial replacement for cement on compressive strength and water absorption so as to determine the quality classification of paving blocks based on SNI 03-0691-1996. Zeolite and coconut shell ash as a partial replacement for portland cement by the manufacturer PT. Semen Padang and sand originating from the Kampar river in the Teratak Buluh area use a variation of a 7% zeolite mixture plus coconut shell ash with a mixture variation of 0%, 2,5%, 5% and 7,5%. In this study using SNI 03-0691-1996. For the compressive strength test using a cube measuring 6 x 6 x 6 cm, and for water absorption testing using a test object measuring 21 x 10,5 x 6 cm. Based on the research conducted, the compressive strength of paving blocks can be known to be the optimum value for variations in 7% zeolite mixture plus 5% coconut shell ash. The value of water absorption tends to increase for each variation, so that the greater the amount of zeolite and coconut shell ash used as a partial replacement for cement, the percentage of water absorption of paving blocks also increases. In the variation of the 7% zeolite mixture plus 0% to 5% coconut shell ash, it met the B quality standard, while the other variations obtained D quality. This shows that the use of too much zeolite and coconut shell ash is not good for the quality of paving blocks.
