Abstract

Smartphone Addiction is a problem that is quite serious, especially among teenagers. Excessive use of smartphones can cause many teenagers to spend their time only using smartphones, so this can reduce their productivity and potentially affect academic achievement for students. Self-esteem is one of the factors that can cause a person to experience Smartphone Addiction because low self-esteem tends to require full support from friends or other people so they can feel more valued. This study aims to determine the relationship between self-esteem and Smartphone Addiction in psychology students at Riau Islamic University. The number of samples is 90 students. determining the sample in this study using simple random sampling. Data collection in this study used the Smartpone Addiction and Self-Esteem scales, each of which totaled 34 items and 33 items. Based on the results of Spearman's Non-Parametric correlation test, the data showed a correlation value of r = -0.316 with a value of p = 0.002 meaning that there was a negative relationship between self-esteem and smartphone addiction in psychology students at the Islamic University of Riau. The results showed that there was a negative relationship between self-esteem and smartphone addiction in psychology students at Riau Islamic University.
