Abstract

ABSTRACT Mardiah, 2022. An Analysis of Students’ Writing Anxiety at The Tenth Grade at SMK Taruna Bhakti Indonesia Kateman. English Language Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Islam Riau. Advisor: Yulianto, S.Pd., M.Pd. Keywords: Analysis, Writing, Anxiety, Writing Anxiety. Writing anxiety is more likely to depend on special situations and circumstances that can make a person feel uncomfortable when asked to write in English. When students are asked to write in English, students feel anxious and worried that they will be laughed at in front of the class. Thus, writing anxiety in this research to feelings of nervousness, uncomfortable, unconfident, and fear when the learners write in English. The objective of the research was to find out the students writing anxiety in the tenth grade at SMK Taruna Bhakti Indonesia Kateman. The problem in this study was the students’ writing anxiety. This study only focuses on one variable. The research was descriptive research. The total population used in this study was 67 students, the technique used to take the sample is total sampling, so the sample of this study was 67 students of the tenth grade at SMK Taruna Bhakti Indonesia Kateman. The researcher gave a questionnaire to collect data on the students’ writing anxiety. After the data has been collected, it was found that the mean score of students’ writing anxiety was 3.74, it was in the “Seriously Anxious” 3.74 was in the range of 3.6-4. Moreover, most students’ writing anxiety is avoidance behavior, with a mean score is 3.83, then the second one is somatic anxiety, with a mean score is 3.74, and the last is cognitive anxiety, with a mean score is 3.70. This means had seriously anxiety in writing. Based on the result of the questionnaire, the students’ Cognitive Anxiety is categorized as “Seriously Anxious”, the students feel so nervous about writing, they feel worried to get bad scores, and they felt so worried about other people’s thinking about their writing. Second, the students’ Somatic Anxiety is categorized as “Seriously Anxious”, the students often go blank when writing English, feeling trumble and feel fear when writing English under a time constraint. The last, based on the result of the questionnaire, the students’ Avoidance Behavior was categorized as “Seriously Anxious”, the students do their best to avoid situations in which I have to write in English.
