Abstract

The phenomenon that is prevalent among students today is the social climber, because it is considered to be a requirement of social life. Many students spend their time just hanging out and using social media inappropriately, such as posting photos or videos that show off their luxurious lifestyle. Social climbing is done by students to exist on Instagram in order to gain social recognition and gain popularity because they want to look rich on social media. The aim of this research is to determine the relationship between the intensity of Instagram use and social climbing among students at the Faculty of Psychology, Riau Islamic University. This type of research is quantitative with a correlational approach. The scale used is an Instagram usage intensity scale consisting of 30 items and a social climber scale consisting of 18 items. The number of samples used was 300 people with a non-probability sampling technique, namely purposive sampling. The results of the research carried out in this study show that there is a significant positive relationship between the intensity of use of Instagram and social climbers. It can be seen from the results of the analysis using correlation techniques that the correlation coefficient between the intensity of Instagram use and social climbing is (r) = -.464 and it is known that the significant value is 0.000<0.05. This means that the higher the intensity of Instagram use, the higher the social climber level among students at the Faculty of Psychology, Riau Islamic University. Likewise, the lower the intensity of Instagram use, the lower the level of social climber among students at the Faculty of Psychology, Islamic University of Riau.
